#LBSSdesigners : Paco Rabanne

Paco Rabanne was a Spanish and French fashion designer known for his avant-garde and innovative approach to fashion. Rabanne’s interest in fashion came from his mother, who worked as a seamstress for Balenciaga. Although he was passionate about fashion, Rabanne worked in the concrete industry for over 10 years before his career brought him to fashion. In that period, however, he was successful in selling fashion sketches to fashion houses such as Dior and Givenchy.

In the 1960s, Rabanne’s designs became increasingly daring and unconventional. His first collection, showcased in 1966, featured 12 “unwearable dresses” made from contemporary materials such as metal, plastic, and paper. This collection established him as a pioneer in the use of unconventional materials in fashion. His designs were characterized by their futuristic, space-age aesthetic, featuring geometric shapes, bold colors, and metallic textures. Paco Rabanne became known for his iconic metal chainmail dresses, which were seen on many celebrities. These dresses were made by hand-linking metal discs together to create a stunning, shimmering effect. Rabanne’s chainmail designs became a symbol of the era’s avant-garde and rebellious fashion movement, as they challenged traditional notions of femininity and beauty.

Rabanne was also famous for his use of unusual techniques in dressmaking. He often employed techniques such as weaving, knotting, and draping to create unique and visually striking designs. For example, in his collection “12 Unwearable Dresses in Contemporary Materials,” he used geometric shapes and angular cuts to create avant-garde silhouettes that challenged traditional notions of fashion. Another technique Rabanne was known for is his use of laser cutting. He was one of the first designers to incorporate laser cutting technology into his designs, allowing him to create intricate new patterns and shapes which weren’t possible before the use of this technology.

In addition to his innovative designs, Paco Rabanne is known for his line of perfumes that he saw as a real fashion accessory. In 1969, he launched his first fragrance, Calandre, which quickly became a bestseller. The success of Calandre led to the creation of many other successful fragrances. Rabanne was known for his original approach to fragrance, using unique combinations of scents and ingredients to create fragrances that reflected his unique style and personality.

Paco Rabanne was involved in various social and political causes. He was a vocal advocate for environmentalism and animal rights, and he was known to incorporate these values into his work. Rabanne was one of the first designers to use recycled materials in his designs. Furthermore, Paco Rabanne was also a pioneer in promoting diversity and inclusivity on the runway. In 1969, he hired the first African American model to walk in a high fashion runway show. The model, Bethann Hardison, was influential in paving the way for other models to follow in her footsteps. This groundbreaking moment was a significant milestone in the fashion industry’s ongoing efforts to become more diverse and inclusive, and remains a powerful symbol of Rabanne’s commitment to pushing boundaries and challenging conventions.

Paco Rabanne sadly passed away on the 3rd of February, 2023. He will be remembered as an influential designer who, through his use of novel materials and techniques, redefined the limits of what is possible in fashion. Rabanne’s legacy continues to inspire and influence designers today, ensuring that his visionary and groundbreaking work will remain a defining part of fashion history for years to come.
